Step 2 - Room Concept

All Contestants should submit a Room Concept entry. If you only wish to participate in the Room Concept category, then do not complete step 3 of the contest. If you plan on submitting an entry in the Room Design category, you must first complete step 2 and submit a Room Concept entry for the room you will be designing.

For the contest, the theme is a zombie-ridden set of summer camp buildings.

In 1974, a series of mysterious murders took place at the Brood Lake Campground in Hanover County, prompting it to be known as "Blood Lake" forever more. One of the campers died in a tragic accident. Rumor has it that before the authorities could be notified, the body of the camper was somehow re-animated and began viciously attacking other campers and staff members. One by one the residents fell victim to the flesh-eating zombie and soon became part of the rampage themselves. Your task is to design a room in the haunt to help tell the story of those tragic days in 1974.

You may pick from one of four settings for your concept:

  • The Camp Kitchen
  • The Boy's Dormitory
  • The Camp Office
  • The Game Room
Entries for any other setting will not be considered.

Assumptions and Constraints: While it is fun to brainstorm and come up with creative ideas, the winners of this contest will create concepts and designs that can actually be implemented in the real world. Therefore, here are a few things to keep in mind when you are creating your concept:

  • Budget: Assume a budget of no more than $300 for your room.
  • Safety: We don't expect you to know all the ins and outs of haunt safety, but a concept that puts customers in any actual danger is of no use.
  • Time:Assume that your room will need to be constructed, dressed (decorated), wired and tested in less than 7 days.

Please submit the following information to complete your Room Concept entry:

  • Location: Kitchen, Boy's Dormitory, Camp Office or Game Room.
  • Title: Give your room a brief descriptive title.
  • # of Actors/Operators: Indicate how many people are required to operate the room. Give an exact number. Keep in mind that as a practical matter, fewer is better.
  • Characters:
    • Give a description of each character that inhabits the room
    • Describe the costume required for each character
    • Describe makeup required for each character
    • Describe personal props required for each character
  • Set:Describe in detail how the room is to be furnished and decorated.
  • Lights:Describe in detail how the room is to be lit. Keep in mind that we NEVER use open flame of any kind in the interior of a haunted attraction.
  • Sound:Describe in detail what sound effects or background sounds are required.
  • Special Effects:Describe in detail any special effects required in the room. Keep the budget in mind!
  • Overall Action:Describe in detail the action in the room as customers move through. Keep in mind that customers must have a clear path to travel along. Your description should focus on the scare delivered in the room.
  • Sketch(Optional):If you find it helpful, you may include a sketch of your room concept. The sketch may be submitted in any common graphics file format that can be opened on a Windows PC, such as PDF, GIF, JPEG or PNG files. The file should be 1MB in size or less. Include your name, email and/or phone number in the sketch. Anonymous sketches will not be considered.

When you are finished, simply email your entry to contest@bloodlakeva.com with the words "Blood Lake 2009 Room Concept Entry" in the subject line. You may put your entry in the body of the email or attach it as a document. If you are submitting a sketch, attach it in this email also. Please note that all attachments will be scanned for viruses. Any attachment that is detected as malicious will not be opened and the entry will be disqualified.

Please direct any questions to the contest@bloodlakeva.com email account.

Have fun, and we look forward to seeing your terrifying concept!

If you are only competing in the concept category, you are now finished.

Step 3 - Room Design

Before creating your Room Design, please complete Step 2 and submit your Room Concept entry.

The room will be rectangular and be 12 feet in length, 11 feet in width and 8 feet in height. There is a 3 foot wide X 78 inch high doorway opening in opposing corners of the 11 foot sides of the room. There are no doors and no ceiling in the room.

A clear path of travel must be maintained throughout the room. Any path constriction less than 42 inches requires an alternate 42 inch path of travel through the room. Given space constraints, we advise that designers observe a single amply wide path of travel.

All entries must include the following items:

  1. A plan (top) view diagram of the room.
The plan view should depict the 12 foot sides at the top and bottom of the diagram. The door openings will be in the upper portion of the left side wall and the lower portion of the right side wall. Customer flow is right to left through the room. The plan view should include all extra walls, significant set pieces, props, devices and location of actors in the room. The designer must include their name, email and/or phone number in the diagram. Anonymous diagrams will not be considered.
  2. Four interior side elevation diagrams.
Additional elevations and callouts may be included for any design elements on the exterior of the room. The designer must include their name, email and/or phone number in all diagrams. Anonymous diagrams will not be considered.
  3. A detailed perspective diagram/sketch.
This diagram is intended to show the dramatic and creative look and feel of the room, and should focus on the scare as witnessed by the customer. Use of color, textures and inclusion of characters/devices executing the action of the room is encouraged. The designer must include their name, email and/or phone number in the sketch. Anonymous sketches will not be considered.
  4. Rough Customer Flow Sketch (Optional)
A sketch showing relative locations of actors and important props/set pieces in the room. The plan view should cover this, but some designers prefer a stripped down sketch to illustrate the action of the room.
  5. Narrative description of the room. (Optional)
This should be covered by your Room Concept entry, but if you feel you need to add more detail, please add it using the Room Concept format and re-submit as part of Step 3.

Finalists will be asked to submit a detailed budget for their designs. Designing rooms is fun, but paying for them is not, so judging will factor in the economic reality of converting a design into a functional scene in the haunt.

When you are finished, email your entry to contest@bloodlakeva.com with the words "Blood Lake 2009 Room Design Entry" in the subject line. If attachment size constraints prohibit a single email, the subject line should be: "Blood Lake 2009 Room Design Entry X of y," where x is the current email number and y is the total number of emails (1 of 3, 2 of 3, etc...). Please note that all attachments will be scanned for viruses. Any attachment that is detected as malicious will not be opened and the entry will be disqualified.

Please direct any questions to the contest@bloodlakeva.com email account.

Have fun, and we look forward to seeing your awesome design!
